Prof. Bala Subrahmanya, Senior Professor from Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc.), Bangalore, delivered a lecture on “The Art of Publishing: What, When, Where and How to Publish” under JKLU Distinguished Lecture Series on January 15, 2020.Highlighting the significance of research publications for academia in the higher education space, Prof. Bala stressed upon the need of planning ones research journey. Taking examples from ISRO’s contributions to research and development, he said that research could bring about positive changes at national, societal level or an enterprise level. Lamenting on the fact that India’s research output in world’s best journals is negligible, Prof. Bala classified the barriers to research productivity for Indian researchers as natural barriers and artificial barriers. He further added that one should aim for visible research contributions through multiple avenues, such as research projects, guiding research scholars and research publications. He also urged that institutional leadership must create an ambience that is conducive to research and facilitate faculty members in furthering their research agenda by means of balancing teaching, research and administrative responsibilities. Incentivizing good-quality research output was another area that he touched upon during his lecture. He also shared some pitfalls that must be avoided while communicating with world-class publishers and how to handle the reviewer’s comments. At the end, Prof. Bala generously handled specific queries of faculty members at the University. The session was well attended by faculty members from various constituent institutes of the University. The session was coordinated by Dr. Ashwini Sharma, Assistant Director, IM, JKLU.
