On October 26, 2021 JKLU’s Centre for Communication and Critical Thinking (CCCT) organized a session on “Queerious Conversations” in association with Global Shaper, Jaipur Hub. Ms. Shikha Soni, who is a queer identifying /queer affirmative psychologist and a mental-health researcher at University College London was invited to facilitate the session. The session aimed to create an oasis of encouragement, acceptance, and empathy to foster dialogue around Queer Activism, through increased awareness and sensitivity. This session series is the first-of-its kind in Jaipur and intends to serve as a platform to generate dialogue around queer activism in its regional context. During the session, Ms Soni clarified common myths about the queer community, and the range of social and psychological struggles they commonly have to deal with. She explained the differentiation of sexual orientation, sexual identity, gender identity and gender expression and explored the various sections within the transgender label and intersectionality of identities. She also spoke about the evolving nature of queer spaces and problems and issues with heteronormativity. The session was conducted in hybrid mode and also went live on Instagram and Facebook. It drew over 200 participants and was a great eye-opener for many.
