Mechanical Engineering is one of the basic branches of engineering and its fundamental principles are used in the design, development and construction of nearly all of the physical devices and systems we see around us including but not limited to automobiles, machines in all kind of factories, machinery used in building construction, road construction, agriculture etc. Mechanical engineers are also involved with the design, construction and operations of all kinds of machinery. They conceptualize design for any product to be manufactured. They also develop, test and manufacture the state of the art machinery.
Students who complete a BTech in mechanical engineering can look for employment in almost every type of manufacturing industry such as automobile, aerospace, railway coach factory, chemical manufacturing plants, metal producing plants etc. Apart from the private sector, mechanical engineers gain employment in public sector units such as BHEL, SAIL, GAIL, Indian Railway, Electricity Boards. Typical examples of the technology that mechanical engineers deal with include automobiles, aircrafts, turbines, robotics, agriculture machinery, and so on. Mechanical engineering, being a fundamental branch of engineering, provides employment in all kind of industries making it a branch of choice for aspiring engineers.
Manufacturing Engineering is a complex and foundational branch of engineering to make or produce anything in a factory and therefore, it requires a great deal of specialized knowledge. Mechanical engineers are often referred as manufacturing engineers also as they are recruited by all kinds of companies which manufacture a variety of machines, robotics and other equipment. The mechanical engineers are normally responsible for the design, selection of materials, specifications and the development of production processes and equipment. Responsibility for plant layout, production planning and control, as well as plant maintenance is also a major job responsibility that mechanical engineers undertake.
The department is aimed at production, design and quality assurance in the industry. The programme offered by the department will help in developing highly qualified mechanical engineers capable of taking up the challenges in this important area of specialization. In this specialization, students will understand the concept of CAD/CAM, total Quality management, Refrigeration and Air–Conditioning, Machine Design Engineering, Non- Conventional Energy Resources and Use, as well as basic concepts of Industrial Engineering.
The workshop has different sections of foundry, fitting, welding, carpentry and smithy. This imparts training and basic skills to the students. The objective of this lab is to become familiar with various tools and processes used in different manufacturing sectors.
The lab is equipped with computerized Universal Testing machine, Torsion Testing machine, Fatigue Testing machine, Hardness Testing Machine. The objective of this lab is to understand and measure various mechanical properties of the materials.
The lab is equipped with a variety of flow measuring devices, venture meter, weirs, notches, orifice meters and equipments for flow study techniques for estimating losses in pipes, study of impact of jests over vanes, and so on. The Machinery Lab is equipped with Pelton Wheel, Francis Turbine, Reciprocating Pump, Centrifugal Pump, Hydraulic Ram, and many more. The objective of this lab is to understand the function of various experiments, analyze the results and draw the performance curves.
One of the best automobile labs in the country, it is equipped with 2 stroke petrol/diesel engine, gas turbine models, petrol and diesel engine test-rig etc. The objective of this lab is to understand the working of petrol/diesel engine and analysis of experimental results other Labs are Steam power Engineering lab, Renewable Energy, Heat Transfer, CFD labs and Metrology lab.
This lab is equipped with the Slider Crank and Crank Rocker Mechanism, Kinematics of Universal Joints, Kinematics Gears, Gear Train Experimental Setup, Governors Experimental Setup, CAM-Experimental Setup, Motorized gyroscope, Whirling of Shaft, Balancing of Reciprocating Masses, Balancing of Rotating Masses, and Vibration System-Spring Mass System.
The objective of this lab is to understand and prepare 2D/3D drawing on computer, to be able to understand plan, elevation and cross-sections to prepare drawings, a fair knowledge of units, scales and drawing instruments and their applications. Lab has its latest software like CREO, AnSYS, and many more.
This lab is equipped with refrigeration test rig, air conditioning test rig and a host of other equipments. The objective of this lab is to study window A/C, air washer, basic components of refrigeration and air-condoning system and also experiment on refrigeration test rig and air conditioning test rig.
The lab is equipped with Milling Machine, Shaper Machine, Lath Machine, Gas and Arc Welding Machine, Rolling Machine, Mold making and Casting, Sand Testing, Injection Molding etc.
Given the prevalent lock-down to deal with the medical emergency caused by Covid-19, JKLU’s admissions process can be completed online.
