Can Learning Agility Be Taught in Business Schools?

Learning agility is the capability of rapid learning to address unfamiliar and new situations and problems. You can also describe it as having the knowledge of what to do when faced with an unforeseen situation. It is the skill that is ideally adapted for the dynamic, complex, and ambiguous business environment of today. Learning agility entails openness, willingness to take risks in spite of mistakes, and continuous reflection. It is also about adaptability and resilience, because it may be necessary to unlearn certain things when unique solutions are the need of the hour. You can think of learning agility as the application of something learned in our experience in an absolutely different context.

There has been quite a debate on whether learning agility is something to be taught or something that is inherent in an individual. The truth is that the zeal must come from within an individual but the ability to master and develop any skill is possible only if we are determined by it. To add to that, there is a growing trend among organizations and institutions today to go to that extra length to handle the issue of inculcating learning agility among employees and students. Many research papers have also been published by experts on the same topic that guide the organizations around the world on how to go through the route of inducing the key components of learning agility among their members.

The first phase of the process is identifying the prospect to learn and then honing it like a skill. The way an individual views a problem is the first thing that needs to be changed. The fixed way of looking at complex scenarios have stopped giving dividends in the modern business world and the need of the hour is taking up a more creative and independent route. A business school can help the students by teaching them to change the way they look at a problem. A budding businessperson needs to analyze every situation in an autonomous way to come up with a unique and creative solution. The institutes encourage the young students to discuss and review case studies, assess POAs by identifying them and appraise all the arguments for and against a matter to zoom-in on the problem areas. To sum it up, a student need not be turned into a model-taker but rather a model-maker.

After the prospect to learn is dealt with, the next step is moving on to the motivation to learn. It helps if a business school can instill experiential learning experiences in the students. This refers to the elevation of risk and establishing a rational connection between academic content and practical experiences. Business schools can aid the graduates to tie together and derive more meaning from the widest range of experiences and not just the academic experiences. The experiences like this that the students imbibe in the business school includes inter-university conferences, in-house meetings, guest lectures, and similar other techniques of motivational development of learning agility.

The third step of the way is the development of adaptability which refers to the capability required in an individual to study and achieve better outcomes. A business school can help a student by evaluating and determining if he/she is ready with the skills to learn and bring the improvement to his/her efficiency, or if the student needs more improved and new ways of doing the same. Adaptability to learn may seem like a herculean task in the beginning, but there are ways to achieve it by an institution. A business school can aid the students to assess the current situation and future prospects. By considering the two situations that have been mentioned earlier, an individual can devise approaches and techniques that turn out to be useful in dealing with such hurdles that they are not familiar with.
