The Chemical Engineering Department is one of the premier engineering departments of J K Lakshmipat University. The Department offers instructions at undergraduate level leading to a 4 year B.Tech degree. The central mission of the department is to provide an outstanding formation in Chemical Engineering to undergraduate students who will ultimately become Professional Engineers and researchers at leading companies and institutions.

Main objective of the chemical engineers are concerned with the design and development of the new processes or the improvement of the existing process for converting Raw materials into useful products through the reliable and economical fashion.

The faculty and staff members of the department are dynamic individuals who are committed to deliver high-quality teaching programs while nurturing an environment where students develop basic fundamentals of chemical engineering skills and raise their awareness of the profession and of its impacts in the Indian chemical industry and the chemical engineering profession worldwide. The curricula of undergraduate courses are designed to support and foster Chemical Engineering as a profession, which interfaces Engineering with all aspects of Basic Sciences. Keeping in view of the current and future requirements of the academia and industry, the department of Chemical Engineering offers a wide spectrum of courses supplemented by a number of electives in the emerging areas at undergraduate level. In order to ensure a broad-based education, both the theory and practical aspects of Chemical Engineering discipline are emphasized.

Infrastructure

The Department of Chemical Engineering is aimed at design and commercial production (conversion of raw materials into various useful products by chemical, physical and biological transformations) of various organic & inorganic chemicals, petroleum products, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, metals, oil & natural gas, sugar, pulp & paper, etc. The Programme will help in developing the required skills to became qualified Chemical Engineers capable of facing the unknown situations and finding feasible alternate solutions.

In this specialization students will understand the basic concepts and design aspects associated with various unit operations (fluid flow operations, mass transfer operations, heat transfer operations, and mechanical operations), unit processes, reaction engineering, process control, environmental pollution control, energy integration, optimization, modeling, simulation (Aspen Plus, Fluent, Gambit, Hysis, etc.), conceptual design, economics, etc. The theoretical courses are supplemented by imparting practical experience through well-equipped laboratories. The curricula of undergraduate courses are designed to support and foster Chemical Engineering as a profession, which interfaces Engineering with all aspects of Basic Sciences. Department of Chemical Engineering is well equipped with state of art laboratories relating to Chemical Reaction Engineering Lab, mass transfer lab, heat transfer lab, mechanical operation and process dynamics and control lab.

Mass transfer lab is setup to understand the basic principles of mass transfer operations and processing of the separation equipment. Students learn about Distillation column, Fluidized bed dryer, Liquid – liquid extraction unit, Absorption in wetted wall column, Vapor in air diffusion, mass transfer with/without chemical reaction, adsorption in packed bed, vapor- liquid equilibrium and batch crystallizer.

Chemical Reaction Engineering Lab is setup to understand the processing of basic reactors normally used in chemical industries. Students learn about different type of reactors, CSTR, RTD Studies in CSTR, RTD studies in plug flow reactor and in packed bed reactors.

Heat Transfer Lab is setup to understand the basic principles of heat transfer operation. Learning out comes of the labs, flow through packed beds and fluidized beds, Thermal conductivity of liquid, double effect evaporator, different types of heat exchanger i.e. shell and tube heat exchanger, plate type heat exchanger, fin type heat exchanger, double pipe heat exchanger, parallel flow and counter flow heat exchanger etc., open pan evaporator, dropwise and filmwise condensation, Stefan boltzman apparatus, unsteady state heat transfer unit, heat pipe demonstrator and heat transfer in agitated vessel.

Mechanical Operation Lab provides chemical engineering students the opportunity to observe, analyze and apply their engineering knowledge and training to the operation of equipment and processes commonly found in many chemical industries like Rotary drum filtration, Froth filtration, Centrifugal pump characteristics, Forced draft tray dryer, Vacuum notch filter, Ball mill, jaw crusher, screw conveyor, magnetic separator, sigma mixer and cyclone separator.

Process dynamics and control Lab is setup to understand the basic principles involved in chemical process control industries. Students study different type of processes without controller to understand their dynamics, process connected in series in interacting and non-interacting mode, study of I/P and P/I converter and flapper nozzle system. They also understand the response of the controller in presence of feedback controllers, i.e. pressure control trainer, temperature control trainer, Multiprocess trainer, Multivariable trainer, control valve characteristics. Instruments are well operated by SCADA software

Fluid Mechanics lab has the basic fluid mechanics set-up to help students understand these fundamental concepts. Fluid mechanics laboratory have all comprehensive experimental set-ups catering to the requirements of course curriculum. The lab is equipped with different flow measuring set-ups such as venture meter, orifice-meter, Pitot tube, etc. The laboratory is equipped with Meta-Centric Height Apparatus, Bernoulli’s apparatus, Venturi meter & Orifice Meter Apparatus, Notch Apparatus, Reynolds Apparatus, Rota meter Apparatus, Laminar & Turbulent Flow Apparatus, Friction Losses Apparatus, Centrifugal Pump Test Rig and Reciprocating Pump Test

Polymers have become an indispensable part of our modern life. Most of the things around us are made up of polymers like laptop, credit cards, automobile accessories, Tire, mobile phones etc. Testing and quality checking of these polymers as a raw material as well as final product is required. Polymer and Rubber testing lab of department of chemical engineering is supported by JK Tyre & Industries Ltd. List of equipment’s available in the laboratory:

Perkin Elmer Thermogravimetric Analyzer (to determine thermal degradation temperature profile of the polymers and rubber samples),

Waters Gel Permeation Chromatography (to determine the polydispersity index and molecular weight of polymers)

Waters Mass Spectrometer (to determine the purity of rubber compounds).

Environmental engineering Laboratory serves as a professionally equipped laboratory for testing the properties of water and air as an integrated part of the course curriculum of the program.
